LETPP Project

We live in a period of unprecedented movement - of capital, of goods and of people. Contact between people and countries has never been easier or more frequent. In such a changing and volatile world, communication across cultures becomes very high stakes.

Such communication is indispensible for international relations. It underpins wealth creation, enables individual mobility and grows employment. Communication is itself a major economic and cultural activity.

Multilingualism has to play a key role in this world where English has greatly facilitated the global impact of the "communications revolution". However, English – even as a lingua franca - also poses key cultural, social and psychological challenges.

Languages in Europe Towards 2020

The final publication of the project is now available, on line and as a hard copy publication. Based on the discussions and debates which took place in 2010 it provides a framework for future consideration of language policy in Europe. It includes a review of current policy and policies at European and state level, an analysis of how things are changing and suggestions for future action in relation to such central issues as The Future Model of Language Policy, The Lingua Franca, Multilingual Education, Languages beyond school (including the importance of immigrant multiligualism), Languages and the Worldwide Web, Multilingual Cities. Conference: Unlocking the Gates of Languages

Following the two seminars on Languages within the contexts of Social Inclusion and Intercultural Communication, a highly successful international conference took place at the LSE on 15th and 16th April 2010, entitled “Unlocking the Gates of Languages”.

The two day event was very well attended (despite volcanic ash travel chaos which meant some last minute changes to the programme). Since participants were given the space to develop ideas and discussion, it was a lively and interactive event with input from employer representatives, policy makers, students from EU countries and language professionals.

The detailed programme of the event is available here. The European policy context was set Teresa Condeço (EU Commission) and Dr Waldemar Martyniuk (Council of Europe) both of whom placed multilingualism and multiculturalism firmly at the heart of Europe and EU Commission policy.


Student Voice

As part of the LETPP conference, we invited students from Bulgaria, Germany Italy, Slovenia, Spain and the UK to share their vision of what European language policy and multilingualism should look like in 2020.

This brought about very interesting ideas, ranging from starting to teach languages very early to emphasis that ‘the learning of a language should be viewed as a privilege, not as a torture in school and/or university’ to the idea that ‘Language skills should be considered a key to personal development and a way to broaden one's horizons.’

The essays tackle issues like language and identity, English as a world language and how to implement any language policy in the ‘diverse unity’ that is the European Union.
